Men's Bootcut Jeans: Introducing Cash, Cut in Vintage Denim

Bootcut is one of the most enduring shapes in American denim, and for men who actually wear boots it never really went anywhere. What has changed is the proportion. Today's bootcut is cut closer through the leg and opens far less at the hem than the version most people picture — closer to a clean straight leg with just enough release to clear a boot shaft.

We built Cash for exactly that. It's our first dedicated bootcut fit, cut in vintage denim with the comfort construction 34 Heritage is known for. Mid rise, straight through the thigh, and opening just enough below the knee to sit cleanly over a boot instead of bunching on top of one.

Here's the short version, and then the detail.

A bootcut jean is straight through the hip and thigh, then widens slightly from the knee to the hem so the leg opening is larger than the knee measurement. That extra room at the bottom is the whole point: it clears the shaft of a boot.

Two clarifications worth making, because the terms get used interchangeably and shouldn't be:

• Bootcut is not flare. A flare opens dramatically from the knee, often by two inches or more, and reads as a fashion statement. A modern bootcut opens by a fraction of an inch and reads as a well-proportioned straight leg.
• Bootcut is not relaxed. Relaxed describes room through the seat and thigh. Bootcut describes the shape below the knee. A jean can be one, both, or neither.

Cash is the modern interpretation. The knee measures 17" and the leg opening measures 17.25" — a quarter inch of release. It's enough to fall over a boot without catching, and subtle enough that it looks like a clean straight leg when you're wearing sneakers.

The two core colorways — Light Brushed Vintage and Dark Brushed Vintage — are cut from our Vintage denim, a heavier, more textured fabric with the depth and slight irregularity of denim that's already been lived in. It has the hand of a classic five-pocket jean: substantial, a little rugged, with the surface interest that flat modern denims tend to lack.

The brushed finish softens it further, and the classic contrast stitching keeps the detailing traditional rather than minimal.

What makes it a 34 Heritage jean is the 1% elastane. It's a small number and it does a lot of work — enough recovery that the knees and seat hold their shape through a full day, enough give that you never feel the fabric fighting you when you sit down or get into a car. That balance between authentic denim weight and all-day comfort is the thing we've spent years refining, and it's why our jeans keep showing up on lists of the most comfortable men's jeans.

For a lighter, warmer-weather option in the same silhouette, the Sand Colored Urban is cut in our Urban fabric — smoother, lighter, and closer to a refined trouser in tone. It's the pair that works with a linen shirt in August.

Cash makes the most sense if you fall into one of these groups:

You wear boots. Chelsea boots, work boots, western boots, hiking boots. A slim or tapered hem forces the fabric to stack on top of the boot shaft. A bootcut hem falls past it.

You're built through the leg. If you have developed thighs and calves — from cycling, lifting, or genetics — a jean that tapers hard below the knee will pull. Cash keeps a consistent line from thigh to hem, which reads as balanced rather than strained.

You want a classic silhouette without going baggy. Bootcut has been the default American jean shape for most of the last fifty years. It looks intentional in a way that neither skinny nor oversized quite manages.

You're tall. The 36" inseam in particular is hard to find in a bootcut. Long legs and a slightly open hem are a natural match.

Weekend, dark wash. Dark Brushed Vintage, a heavy knit or flannel, Chelsea or work boots. The dark wash keeps the whole thing from tipping western.

Office-adjacent. Dark Brushed Vintage, a merino crewneck or an unstructured blazer, leather boots. Dark, clean denim with a bootcut hem passes easily in most business-casual settings — more on that in our guide to dressing up denim and wearing denim to work.

Warm weather. Sand Colored Urban, a linen or oxford shirt, suede boots or loafers. The lighter fabric and neutral tone read closer to a chino than a jean.

Are bootcut jeans still in style for men? Yes. Bootcut has returned as part of a broader shift away from skinny fits toward classic and relaxed silhouettes. The current version is subtler than the 2000s bootcut — a slight opening below the knee rather than a pronounced flare.

What's the difference between bootcut and straight leg jeans? A straight leg maintains roughly the same width from knee to hem. A bootcut widens slightly below the knee so the leg opening is larger than the knee. On Cash, that difference is 0.25".

What's the difference between bootcut and flare jeans? Bootcut opens by a fraction of an inch and is designed to clear a boot. Flare opens by two inches or more and is a deliberate fashion silhouette. Cash is a bootcut.

Can you wear bootcut jeans with sneakers? Yes. Because the opening on Cash is only slightly wider than the knee, it sits cleanly over a low-profile sneaker without excess fabric.

What rise are Cash bootcut jeans? Mid rise, with an 11.5" front rise and 16.5" back rise in size W32/L32.

What size should I order in Cash? Take your usual 34 Heritage waist. For inseam, size up an inch from your tapered-fit length if you plan to wear these primarily with boots.

Are bootcut jeans good for bigger thighs? Yes. Because the leg doesn't taper below the knee, bootcut avoids the pulling that slim fits create through the thigh and calf. Cash runs to a 42" waist.
